Project description:
The project “Melting Through the Scatters of Time” explores the theme of synthetic historical memory formation. This two-part media installation contrasts the traditional perception of centralised, institutionalised history—portrayed as a tapestry of triumphant events designed to instil pride in contemporaries—with an alternative view through the lens of untold stories of individuals lost in the mists of time. This approach reveals history as an assemblage of “ruins,” fragmented remnants of the past that shape our worldview and influence the present.
The project was originally commissioned by Cryptic for the Sonica Festival in Glasgow. It consisted of a two-part installation located in two historic sites: the Mercat Cross Monument, restored in 1930, and the Tolbooth Clock Tower, built in the 17th century.
The Mercat Cross Monument
At the Mercat Cross Monument, a five-channel sound installation was presented, creating a looping soundscape that immersed visitors in a space “out of time.” Additionally, the space featured reflective fabric panels displaying the artist’s statements on the formation of historical memory and our perception of history. These texts became visible only when visitors explored the installation with a flashlight.
At the Tolbooth Tower, an eight-channel sound piece was installed, employing desynchronized mechanical metronomes. This work generated a rhythmic cacophony, emphasising the fragmented perception of time and reinforcing the theme of disjointed temporal experiences.
